On Becoming an Elf & Receiving ZiggyShortCrust Snail Mail

To be a mona lisa smiling elf, or not to be, that is the question! Well the answer is definitely to be. Respectfully speaking, it is very hard to draw me in general; So I am very impressed that Ziggy took her time to elfify me! A thank you, thank you thank you!! To ziggy for doing this, it is great to see another outlook on what I can look like as a elf. Though one thing I did learn from Ziggy was that elves frown so much more than humans!

I also was lucky enough to receive some Ziggy snail mail all the way from England! I included the photos below to show her gorgeous workmanship. It is very rare to find someone so openly giving! Especially one who revives the lost art of snail mail. I will definitely be sending something her way!

I think one of the best things about her blog is that elves and fairies are taken back to those stories we were told throughout our childhood and so were the times when we had the fine art of snail mail to. Though I think an honourable question is do the younger Generation Z (born from 1995 to 2012) still receive snail mail from each other?

If you want to be Elfified or Snail Mailed visit ZiggyShortCrust's blog!

Interview with Ziggyshortcrust - Childrens Book Illustrator & Blogger

I went pondering to a blog full to the brim with drawings of elves, fairytales, dragon scales and wonderful creatures that look to be made of stories and thousands of possibilities. This whimsical blog is named "ziggyshortcrust", which is just the sort of name you'd expect to be sitting a side Rumplestiltskin, Rapunzel and Pochahontus, whilst drinking a cup of tea philosophizing amongst themselves keeping the Mad Hatter at bay. I do think ziggyshortcrust lives in a world that many people, including myself, dream of; Drawing illustrations for childrens books and driving around in a cruisey Wolkswagon Van.

Being the Ziggy fan that I am, I'd love to formally introduce you to Ziggyshortcrust with a personal interview with her!

Tell us a little about yourself and your blog?
First of all thank you Elle, for such an amazing introduction. You’ve got my lifestyle nailed. It’s just like that… only with more tea.

I live in the North East of England and am a very proud Northerner. I’m actually a Yorkshire lass but have been an adopted Geordie for some 20 years now. (A Geordie is the name for someone who was born and lives in Newcastle upon Tyne, the city I live in). My day job is working in a fantastic museum; Seven Stories, the National Centre for Children’s Books. It is full of original artwork and manuscripts and regularly visited by children’s authors and illustrators.

By night I am an elf whisperer and doodler which is the subject of my blog. There you can find out all about the long faced, pointy eared creatures that inhabit my world, join in with my letter writing challenge or find out what it’s like to wrangle two skinny dogs and drive a clapped out old VDub bus.

Note: The Simonside Elf; long faced, glum with pointy ears. Elves don't smile you know. At least not in front of humans!

What inspired you to begin drawing and blogging?
I have enjoyed drawing and writing for as long as I can remember, but it was who rather than what that inspired me. Miss Shaw and Mrs Bell, my English teacher and art teacher respectively. Between them they encouraged my writing and love of books and helped develop my drawing skills. They were both incredibly supportive and generous with their time.

And blogging? Well, a little elf whispered in my ear one day “You should start a blog Ziggy, you won’t regret it.” And she was right. It is so much fun and I have discovered some fabulously talented people. Every day I’m zipping off around the world to have a look at what everyone is up to and joining in with thought provoking conversations. The discipline of regularly posting work has improved my drawing skills too.

What are your favourite pieces of artwork you've ever made?
I love drawing people rather than landscapes or inanimate objects. And I especially enjoy drawing faces. My daughter has been a pretty good model over the years and my favourite piece is of her with a baby dragon. (You can find out about the day we went Dragon Training for her tenth birthday on my blog).  My “go to medium” is coloured pencils and I was particularly pleased with the results for this.  The tilt of her head and the look of fondness she has for the dragon capture the moment.

The other piece also includes my daughter this time as a Celtic Warrior. I love the Celtic style of knots and swirls and their mythical creatures and humans bound together for eternity.  This is in my other favourite medium, ink, and was inspired by the “beard pullers” a description given to Celtic images of two opposing warriors locked in combat holding each other’s facial hair. Of which they had a lot! My daughter is entwined in a game of tug with Lizzie, our much missed mongrel beauty.

If you had to go to an island and only bring three things what would they be?
The first two would be the skinny dogs; Mischa and Honey my lurchers. They are great hunting dogs so hopefully they would track down my supper. They would love running around an island all day and we could all snuggle up at night to keep warm. The third thing would be a bottle of everlasting environmentally friendly shampoo. I hate having dirty hair, and you never know when Man Friday might turn up. (I’m assuming this is a desert island of course. )

What is your favourite childrens book?
Goodness me! Just one book? Can I be cheeky and choose two? Actually, even that’s hard. All I ever read now is children’s books and there is a vast array to choose from, all wonderfully written and a joy to read, from picture books through to YA fiction.

I’m going to pick one that inspired me as a child and one that inspired me as an adult. First up, Five Run Away Together by Enid Blyton. I read all the Famous Five books, again and again. They were my childhood equivalent of the Harry Potter series.  I longed to be in their gang, roaming the windswept Cornish countryside, stumbling upon adventures with a loyal dog like Timmy by my side.  My heroine was feisty Georgina who acted like a boy and demanded to be known as George. And my first book crush was Julian, the leader of the group. But it is the third book that I remember because of the terrifying Stick family who try to poison Timmy.  When I write now I always have that sense of adventure in mind.

My favourite children’s book read as an adult is in complete contrast to The Famous Five. It is YA novel Tender Morsels by Margo Lanagan. I absolutely adore fairy tales and this is a retelling of Snow White, Rose Red. It is not, however, for the feint hearted. The first 40 pages or so are terrifyingly dark and nightmarish and although set in a folkloric world are none the less horrific. Lanagan’s writing is stupendous and I would recommend any of her novels and short stories. I also adored the book cover by Caniglia.

What is your favourite quote?
Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful
Quoted by William Morris

I like to keep possessions to a minimum, clutter makes me nervous. The fewer things you have the more precious they are. It helps you focus on what is important.  I think that’s why I enjoy life on the road in Sunny, my little yellow bus. Space is at a premium so everything I take has to earn its place.  If it’s useful as well as beautiful so much the better, which is why vintage pieces make it into the bus.  Well worn, but still serviceable kitchenalia are wonderful.  Mind you that said I probably do have more fine liner pens than any rational human being requires.

Audrey Hepburn Digitally Recreated in Galaxy Chocolate's TV Advert

"Our mother often spoke about her love of chocolate and how it lifted her spirit, so we’re sure she would have been proud of her role as the face of Galaxy.” Hepburn’s sons, Sean Ferrer and Luca Dotti, said regarding the project.
Audrey Hepburn is digitally recreated through the use of CGI to star in Galaxy's Chocolate TV Advert. The advert is quite classical, timeless and respectful to Audrey Hepburn's likeness. The TV Advert features Audrey Hepburn waiting on a bus, whilst there is commotion outside stopping the bus from moving. She looks into her bag to see a block of Galaxy and looks outside the window to see a gentlemen offering her a lift.

Exclusive Interview with Paula Theodore founder of Santorini Sun

I would love to take this opportunity to introduce you to Paula Theodore the founder of Santorini Sun. Paula Theodore was raised in Melbourne, with much of her childhood time spent visiting her Grandfathers orange orchids in Greece, watching her Grandfather combine nature's herbs to create skincare products. The Santorini Sun products formed Sunless Tanning Lotion using only the best organic ingredients to create only the best sun protection, skincare, body care and sunless tanning products!

Paula Theodore founder of Santorini Sun

What inspired you to create Santorini Sun?
The inspiration of Santorini Sun came from two things: A deep fascination with the connection between nature and beauty, and being disillusioned by the products available on the market. On one end the natural products that were available didn’t deliver results and on the other end there were products that contained harmful ingredients. A product line that filled both of these voids had to be developed.

Why is it important to use 100% Natural and Certified Organic products?
Research has shown many of the chemicals used in beauty products, and in particular self tanning products, contain harmful ingredients, parabens, colours, and petro-chemicals. As the wise wizard ‘Hippocrates’ said:
Nature is the most dominant ruler of all”
He used essential oils, herbs and plant extracts not only to heal the body but the spirit and the soul.

What do the organic product's in Santorini Sun do?
At Santorini Sun we share the same holistic approach by incorporating natural ingredients to heal and prolong youthfulness. Some of our favourite natural ingredients really benefit the skin; Sweet Orange Oil rejuvenates and tones dull skin, Sweet Almond Oil is rich in fatty acids to nourish and moisturise the skin, White Tea is a powerful antioxidant and Olive Squalane reduces & prevents wrinkles, age spots, boosts cell renewal.

What is your favourite product from Santorini Sun?
I have many favourites from the range it depends on how I feel and the occasion. For a special occasion I love the Island Goddess body shimmer – it’s so natural and leaves my skin glowing with a subtle sparkle. On lazy days or over cold winter months, I love the Everyday Gradual Tan for a healthy radiant glow. In the warmer months, I alternate between my sunless tanning cream and lotion. One product I never leave without is the face tan. It is just perfect and even dare to go out make up free with this one !

If you had a gorgeous day to get ready for, how would you get ready using Santorini Sun products?
If I had a gorgeous day to get ready for I would firstly exfoliate using mitts, then in the shower I would lather the Santorini Sun Sweet Orange & Almond salt scrub, which leaves me smelling and feeling yummy! Once skin is completely dry, I would apply Santorini Sunless Tanning Cream or Lotion. I’d allow at least 30 minutes to dry before applying the Island Goddess Body Shimmer and would be ready looking and feeling like a Goddess.

What is the best way to use Santorini Sun Body Shimmer Cream?
The best way to use the Santorini Sun Body Shimmer is to either enhance your Sunless Tan (allow at least 30min before) or alone if you just want to add a hint of Shimmer and sparkle to your skin and to your life.

What is the best way to use Santorini Sun Gradual Tan Moisturiser?
The best way to use the Santorini Sun Gradual Tan is daily after shower or before bed to ensure a healthy glow, especially during these cold winter months. It is also great to use to prolong your sunless tan.

How does Santorini Sun make you feel beautiful?
When using Santorini Sun products the freshness of the ingredients make you feel healthy and radiant. When your skin is glowing with a perfect undetectable natural colour, you just simply feel beautiful no matter what you are wearing.

An Exclusive Interview with Helen Dowsley a Freelance Make-up Artist of the Celebrities!

On a beautiful day like today, I would love this opportunity to introduce you to, the brilliant and kind hearted freelance hair and make-up artist Helen Dowsley. Helen's wonderful career as a freelance hair and make-up artist has brought her to work with high profile celebrities whilst working on famous television shows from the likes of Celebrity Apprentice, Australia's Got Talent to even The Morning Show!

With a fabulous dreamy career like this, what more could the fabulous Miss Helen Dowsley want! Well, she hasn't stopped there, Helen is also Priceline's Head Make-Up Artist and is the founder of an Eye Lash company named Live By Lashes!!

I think the appropriate response to Helen Dowsley's accomplishments is "You go girl!".

Helen Dowsley, Freelance Hair and Make-up Artist on the left!

In your career, what would you consider your favourite accomplishment?
I have been very fortunate to work with very famous people, people that have become very known for their craft, whether its acting or singing but I must say my favourite accomplishment was teaching my skills to a group of multicultural women, not only were they amazing at the skill but they will be forever in my heart. The multicultural women were for a course to learn make-up, but it was much more than that.

The women didn’t have any work skills, they had all come from different countries, some refugee by boat, some fled from war torn countries etc. The stories I heard from them were amazing, and then some of their husbands were worse. By them being in a course like this, it was make-up but it also got them out into society. Gave them confidence to know they would be able to hold a job down and that the house hold would not falter.

Tell us a short story! What is the funniest moment you have had in your career?
Back stage at the Arias, I gossiped with a group of high profiled women on just how -HOT- Robbie Williams was on stage! Just then I felt someone beside me as I was talking about it and I didn’t think anything of it. The other women were acting very coy but I was on a high hanging with Robbie! To my embarrassment it was Robbie listening to every word! He was very charming and said he was happy that I was happy!

What is a fashion trend that you currently love?
Maybe because my job is to know and follow the trends, so I am very fortunate to like what will happen in the future, but I must say my favourite trend is how we all love long and thick eyelashes now. They are a trend that is here to stay for quite a while. I have always used them on all of my jobs, it was my secret to making everyone look and feel beautiful, hence 4 yrs ago I went looking all over the world for handmade, ethically sound lashes and guess what? I found them.

What is your most favourite beauty product of all time?
Sheep’s wool fat, great for lip balm; Mixing pigment with it for lipstick, great for eyebrows, dry skin and so on. Infact I was at a fashion show and needed something to keep the ponytail soft and gently lying onto one shoulder, this did the trick.

What is your top fashion or beauty tip?
Eyelashes!!!! Whether your eyes are small, deep set, older than you would like, a lash makes all the difference!

Where do you see yourself in a year?
Doing my magic on my beautiful clients, selling my lashes throughout the world and enjoying the sunshine.

My company, is called Live By Lashes, I started to travel 4 years ago around the world to find a company that not only would sell to a single white female with not a huge business behind her but a company that treated their staff fairly and wisely.
I found such a place that employs uni students, that way they can pay for their education and the conditions are very good. I am able to go there when ever I want, take photos and talk to them all to make sure they are happy and that I am buying an ethical product.

So yes my lash company is Live By Lashes and fingers crossed it will be a success!!

Most people have something which inspires them to push themselves forward; What would you consider is your muse?
My inspiration has always been my 2 boys, my sons. Being a single mum it has been tough working and bringing them up. I have missed out on opportunities because of that, its funny I could tell you maybe a handful of missed opportunities but I can tell you every school assembly, canteen day and fun times that I never missed with them!

What is a personal motto that you live by?
Most people are good people, treat them as you would like to be treated.
………… thanks Dad x

What makes you feel happy?
Family!........... love, laughter, hugs.

What makes you feel beautiful?
Oh that’s easy, I feel beautiful when I have had a cut, colour, blowdry, I apply my makeup, fresh vibrant skin with pretty lashes and a coral lip……… beautiful!

I would love to thank Helen Dowsley for this very enlightening interview. Thank you for introducing Our Beauty Philosophy readers and myself to see what it is like to be apart of your world and to be a freelance make-up artist!

The non-for-profit organisation chosen will help young Australian adults who face problems early on in their lives.

This year I would love to donate the money made to the Kids Helpline. Here is more information about the Kids Helpline:
Kids Helpline is Australia’s only private and confidential, 24-hour telephone and online counselling service specifically for young people aged between 5 and 25 years. Each week counsellors answer more than 5,500 calls and web contacts from children and young people - often regarding very serious issues:
  • Seven times a day children contact us about child abuse
  • Every day Kids Helpline refers a child to an emergency service to deal with a serious issue like child abuse or self harm. Kids Helpline relies on community support to keep counsellors on the line.

An Exclusive Interview with Alyce Cowell, The Westfield Insider

I would love to introduce you to Australia's very own and beautiful Alyce Cowell who is also known as The Westfield Insider! The Westfield Insider is a fashion and beauty blogger, stylist and social media vlogger that gets paid by Westfield, one of Australia's largest multi-billionaire shopping corporations, to be a very savvy shopper and provide expert shopping advice! Alyce Cowell is one lucky lady and a very deserving women, who got choosen out of hundreds of people to be the The Westfield Insider.

I visit The Westfield Insider just as much as I visit Westfield, twice to three times per week! Thanks for keeping me updated on fashion and beauty Alyce!

Alyce Cowell, The Westfield Insider

Tell us a little about yourself?
I'm a blogger, stylist and social media addict on the wrong side of 24, that also goes by the heading of The Westfield Insider. Basically, a very intimidating title for a girl that loves and adores fashion and beauty, and gets to blog and Facebook about it every day.

In your career, what would you consider your favourite accomplishment?
Why is it your favourite accomplishment? That's an easy one... Winning The Westfield Insider competition! I went up against 1450 very talented fashionistas, blogging, vlogging and travelling the country. I finally got selected for the final 3, and with a little help from my family, friends and a very heavy campaign, Australia voted me in as the winner!

What is the funniest moment you have had in your career?
One seemingly ordinary day I got a call from Westfield asking if I had a valid passport. It was very top secret so I couldn't ask any questions, and spent a good part of an excruciating 24hrs debating where I was going. The following day, I received another call telling me to pack my bags because I was heading to London in 2 weeks to appear in Gok's TV commercial. Of course I acted extremely profesh on the phone, but immediately after hanging up I jumped and screamed so much I gave myself two twisted ankles and a sore throat, then I called everyone I know.

What is your most loved fashion item of all time?
Hats are by far my all time favourite fashion item! I have a vast collection of them. For some reason, I always dress by accessories first - hats, shoes, scarves - then have no idea what clothing to wear in between. I feel like hats just give every outfit style. They're mysterious, hide bad hair days, and you always notice a girl in a hat. My favourites come from Sussan, Rubi Shoes and Dotti.

What is your most loved beauty product of all time?
I'm getting to the point where I'm as obsessed with beauty as I am fashion, but I don't think I could possible choose one favourite beauty item. It's just too hard... Like choosing between my children! So I'm going to cheat and say: MAC 'Snob' lipstick, Sportsgirl's 'Body Glow' Wash-Off Bronzing Creme, Lancome Hypnose Drama mascara (and lots of it), Argan Oil and Johnson's Baby Powder for my hair and Viktor&Rolf FlowerBomb perfume. And I always have my nails painted (usually with OPI)... Always.

What is your favourite fashion or beauty tip?
I will not be seen with full length arms - I always scrunch or roll my sleeves up! It shows of the smallest part of your body (your wrists), meaning you won't look like you're drowning in your jacket. This means you can even go up a size or 2 if the store has run out... Just roll the sleeves and I guarantee you'll like what you see!

Most people have something which inspires them to push themselves forward; What would you consider is your muse?
I've always been someone with a bit of ambition who wants to succeed and wants to be or do something significant, so that helps. I would say that creative people that are great writers, dressers, presenters all inspire me... They make me want to run home and do something crafty! As for my muse, that's a piece of cake - the Olsens.

What is a personal motto that you live by?
Speaking of the Olsens... My personal motto is, wait for it...
"What Would Mary-Kate Do?"
which I ponder every morning in front of my wardrobe.

What makes you feel happy?
Sorry to sound cliche, but I'm happiest when I'm with my family and friends. I also feel very happy when I think about having achieved my goals, and that I am able to combine my loves of fashion, beauty, writing and the internet into a job where I get to spend everyday! I just got back from 2 months in the states and Mexico, so when I think about floating in the water drinking cocktails, that makes me pretty happy too!

What makes you feel beautiful?
That is a tough one, because I think it's ingrained in women for never to be 100% satisfied - we could always do with one more dress or a new hair colour! It's also got to do with personality, happiness and confidence.

What a wonderful interview, and to end on that note, here is one of my favourite videos of Alyce Cowell, The Westfield Insider!

My 10 Seconds of Fame in the Guinness World of Records for the Largest Breakfast in Bed

On the 2nd of March 2012, Priceline and Women's Health teamed together to break the new Guinness World Record for the Largest Breakfast in Bed. In Martin Place, Sydney, Australia a total of 289 people were served breakfast by celebrity chef 'Fast' Ed Halmagyi. To complete the record 289 people lay in bed for 5 minutes to eat breakfast despite the rain. 2 people were discounted from the record because their legs or feet were outside of the bed and 1 baby was discounted for being fed from a bottle rather than eating two breakfasts!!

Guinness World Record Broken for the Largest Breakfast in Bed

The event celebrated Priceline's 'I Feel Beautiful' campaign supported by Ada Nicodemou from Home and Away as the 'I Feel Beautiful' ambassador. The campaign surveyed 12,000 women with 51 percent claiming they felt more beautiful if they got more sleep and 46 percent saying they would feel beautiful if they ate well.

Underlying helping women feel beautiful, the campaign also brings the much needed awareness to problems that mothers face who suffer from postnatal depression.

It was a exciting day, Sydney Daily Telegraph and Sunrise teams ran around the  whole event televising for morning Sydney TV and the morning paper. For my 10 seconds of fame, I was interviewed by Unseen TV an online TV show who asked what was my favourite breakfasts in bed which I answered with the fact that I love blueberry crepes. To see me talking about my love for blueberry crepes, click here!

Find Beauty in a Kiss this Valentines Day

You can find beauty philosophy everywhere, even in a kiss amongst chaos. Below I have listed my two favourite kisses of all time captured by photograph including the Vancouver Kiss and the VJ-Day Kiss.

The first picture is known as the Vancouver Kiss. The picture is of an Australian bartender named Scott Jones and his girlfriend a Canadian college student named Alex Thomas. The photograph was taken by Richard Lam during the Vancouver Stanley Cup Riot of 2011. A witness named William wrote to the Vancouver Sun who stated:
"What happened was the police line rushed the crowd and this couple trying to stay together couldn't react in time and were run over my two riot police officers.

The girl who was knocked over landed head first on the pavement with her boyfriend landing partially on top of her. She was in visible pain, crying, but the two officers gave them a parting shove and moved on."
It is said that Scott Jones kissed his girlfriend Alex Thomas to calm her amongst the chaos surrounding them.

The second picture is known as VJ-Day Kiss. The picture is a nurse from a Doctor's Hospital of New York City named Edith Shain and a solider from Newport, Rhode Island named George Medonca. The photograph was taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt during the Victory over Japan Day in Times Square. Victory over Japan Day marked the surrender of the Japan, ending the World War II.

Alfred Eisenstaedt's book named "Eisenstaedt on Eisenstaedt: A Self Portrait" recounts how the photograph was captured:
"In Times Square on V.J. Day I saw a sailor running along the street grabbing any and every girl in sight. Whether she was a grandmother, stout, thin, old, didn't make a difference. I was running ahead of him with my Leica looking back over my shoulder but none of the pictures that were possible pleased me. Then suddenly, in a flash, I saw something white being grabbed. I turned around and clicked the moment the sailor kissed the nurse. If she had been dressed in a dark dress I would never have taken the picture. If the sailor had worn a white uniform, the same. I took exactly four pictures. It was done within a few seconds.
Only one is right, on account of the balance. In the others the emphasis is wrong — the sailor on the left side is either too small or too tall. People tell me that when I am in heaven they will remember this picture."
The VJ-Day Kiss is seen as a symbol of peace, love and hope. Although the soldier was going around kissing every women in Times Square, it is said that this nurse in particular slapped him!

Movie Review: Bill Cunningham New York

"He who seeks beauty will find it"
"Fashion.. is the armour people use to survive the reality of everyday life.
I don't think you can do away with it.
It would be like doing away with civilisation."
Bill Cullingham
The Sydney City Guide TwoThousand also known as TheThousands have been lovely enough to provide me with tickets to see a documentary named 'Bill Cunningham New York' a film by Richard Ress. The documentary tells the story of Bill Cunningham a highly respected fashion photographer. The documentary is  intoxicatingly refreshing with unique appeal, it provides a insight into what it is like to be a photographer of the fashion industry.

Bill Cunningham is a humble, highly moralled, down to earth man who has a great understanding of what beauty is from the inside to the outside. He indulges in taking photos of the public and of famous people of the fashion society who dress uniquely and the people who start the fashion trends. Even though he has had choices to live in extravagance, he has chosen the simpler way of life.

There is a great deal to learn from Bill Cunningham. I found it to be a quite a personal movie and my breathe was taken away many times by what he had to say, by what other people around him had to say and their fond memories. The documentary 'Bill Cunningham New York' is a must see movie, especially if your interested in fashion, beauty and style.

The documentary has been placed in high regard amongst the fashion society bringing in many fantastic reviews including:
"Illuminating and inspiring" ~ Andre Leon Talley, Vogue
"The most elusive and most visible fashion presence in New York has finally been captured in a film, in a deeply moving, visually stunning documentary about New York Times 'on the street' photographer Bill Cunningham." ~ San Francisco Chronicle
"We all get dressed for Bill" ~ Anna Wintour, Vogue
I will definitely be re-watching this movie! A beautiful man, a beautiful movie.

What is Personal Style? By The Stranger Speaks

"Style is the confidence to be yourself.
If you don't know who that is.
Stop thinking. Stop questioning. Stop trying to find out.
Start feeling. Your image will tell you a great deal of who you are"
~ The Stranger Speaks, What is Style?
The Stranger Speaks is a YouTube user who is purely inspirational, he talks about creating yourself through fashion, beauty and style. I have earned a great deal of wealth in knowledge by listening to his videos. Below, I linked one of his YouTube video's named "What is Style?".

A style icon named Gabrielle Chanel quotes "I do not like when one speaks of the Chanel fashion. Chanel is above all a style. Fashion passes, style remains."
What is style to you?
